Caiño

In Galicia, Caiño is a name shared by several old grapes, above all Caiño Tinto, Caiño Longo and Caiño da Terra. The reds have high acidity and often smell of smoke and liquorice. Ronsel do Sil bottles it on its own; everywhere else Caiño goes into blends, and into rosés from Attis and Ronsel do Sil.

Algueira's Fincas

For the Fincas, Algueira in Doade treads the grapes by foot in 300-litre wooden vats and ferments them with all their stems, without added yeast. The wine then ages 18 months in French oak. Caiño shares it with Sousón, from south-facing slate terraces above the Sil.

We stock the Fincas in the 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2017 vintages. We would reach for one of the older ones, such as the Algueira Fincas 2010, and leave the 2017 to lie a few more years.

Several grapes, one name

Our wines contain Caiño Tinto, Caiño Longo and Caiño da Terra. Caiño Longo and Caiño da Terra both go into the Cuvée Primo 2018 from Coto de Gomariz in the Ribeiro. At Guímaro in Sober, Caiño supports the Mencía: in the Finca Capeliños 2022 it makes up 15 percent together with Sousón, Garnacha and Brancellao. Caiño Blanco is a separate white grape, and at Attis it is 25 percent of the Coribante.

Al Pie del Cañón: Caiño alone

Ronsel do Sil makes a pure Caiño from Parada de Sil in the Ribeira Sacra. The vines are 20 to 30 years old and grow on granite between 350 and 470 metres, yielding 3,500 kilos per hectare. The Al Pie del Cañón 2022 ages eight months in French oak, has 12 percent alcohol and runs to 650 bottles. Ronsel do Sil serves it at 17 degrees with grilled fish or mushrooms.

Caiño in rosé

The Sitta Rosado 2023 from Attis in the Val do Salnés is made from Caiño Tinto, Pedral and Espadeiro. The grapes are pressed straight with their stems, the wine is aged in steel, and there are 4,000 bottles. Ronsel do Sil's Vel'Uveyra Rosado 2023 blends Caiño with Mencía, Garnacha Tintorera and Brancellao. It spends five hours on the skins, then six months in French oak, and is served at 9 to 11 degrees.
