Ribera del Duero

Ribera del Duero lies on a high plateau in Castile, and at Raíz de Guzmán in Roa de Duero the vines grow at 820 to 970 metres. Hot days and cold nights slow the ripening and give Tempranillo, called Tinto Fino here, its acidity and aroma. We carry just one estate from Ribera del Duero, but it covers everything from rosé to rarity. Nine wines, from CHF 19.

Raíz de Guzmán grew out of a cheese business in 1998: the family company has been making Páramo de Guzmán cheeses since 1985. Today Cayetana Santos runs both, oenologist Mapi Melado is in charge of the wines, and the winery has a tunnel almost a kilometre long. The Crianza 2021 is a good first pick, twelve to fourteen months in barrique, CHF 29. The Reserva 2019 grows on iron-rich clay around Roa de Duero and spent 18 to 20 months in French oak, CHF 35. The Profunda 2019 comes from the Moradillo plateau at 970 metres, and there are just 500 bottles of Cayetana 2017.
