Algueira is one of the pioneers of the Ribeira Sacra. This family-run estate is one of the bodegas that has revived heroic viticulture with the autochthonous grape varieties of Galicia.
Adega Algueira is a family-run winery located in Doade, in the municipality of Sober in the province of Lugo, Galicia, Spain. The estate lies on the steep slopes of the Sil River in the Ribeira Sacra region, renowned for its spectacular landscapes and “heroic viticulture.”
Adega Algueira is a family business in the emerging Galician wine region of Ribeira Sacra. The origins of the adega – “bodega” in Galician – go back to 1979, when Fernando planted his first vineyard, “Carballo Cobo,” on a piece of overgrown land belonging to his wife’s family. Fernando is considered one of the pioneers of Ribeira Sacra, taking the entrepreneurial risk of reviving viticulture in a very challenging environment – and with great success. Algueira is now recognized as one of the best wine producers in Spain and one of the few Spanish wineries to be admitted to the Place de Bordeaux – effectively the accolade of knighthood for any wine producer worldwide.
Today, Fernando and his family cultivate around 25 hectares across 86 plots along and beyond the Sil River. Algueira stands for artisanal precision, sustainable practices, and the mission of capturing the diversity of regional grape varieties such as Mencía, Godello, and Merenzao in elegant, long-lived wines. The philosophy of Bodega Algueira is defined by the expression of the landscape and terroir. With dedication and patience, wines are crafted that reflect the hard work and uniqueness of Ribeira Sacra – an authentic delight for connoisseurs and wine lovers.
Location and soils The vineyards are situated on terraces with slopes of up to 85°, dating back to Roman times. The soil consists mainly of slate, known for its excellent drainage and heat retention, as well as granite and quartzite in some parcels.
Vines Adega Algueira focuses on cultivating autochthonous grape varieties of the Ribeira Sacra, including the red varieties Mencía, Merenzao, Brancellao, Caíño and Sousón, as well as the white varieties Godello, Dona Branca and Treixadura.
Climate The climate in the Ribeira Sacra, where Adega Algueira is located, is a temperate Mediterranean microclimate with strong Atlantic influence.
Vinification at Algueira is marked by traditional, nature-based methods. Indigenous grapes are harvested by hand, often from steep terraces along the rivers. Using native yeasts and minimal intervention, the result is fresh, mineral-driven wines that embody the character of the terroir. Ageing takes place in stainless steel tanks or wooden barrels to ensure balance and complexity.
Algueira focuses on native grape varieties such as Mencía, Godello, Treixadura, Brancellao, and Sousón, preserving the region’s rich tradition. To guarantee quality, the winery employs a gravity-flow system, which gently processes the grapes without the use of pumps. This preserves the integrity of the must and produces wines that are especially authentic and expressive.
