Vinification: foot-trodden in 300-litre wooden barrels, fermented with 100% stems and no added yeast; racking, pressing and malolactic fermentation in barrel

Fincas is Algueira's wine from Caiño and Sousón rather than Mencía, and it ferments with all its stems. The 2009 is ruby with garnet, smelling of ripe plum and black cherry, cinnamon, clove and vanilla, with eucalyptus, earth and cocoa. Powerful on the palate, with ripe tannins, slate and a finish of roasted notes and orange peel.
At 17 years old it is far from tired. Serve it with braised game, hearty meat or a spicy mature cheese at 16 to 18 °C.

It began in 1979, when Fernando planted his first plot, “Carballo Cobo”, on an overgrown piece of land belonging to his wife Ana's family. Reviving viticulture in such a tough setting was a real risk. Today the family farms around 25 hectares in 86 plots along the Sil and beyond. Algueira is one of the pioneers that brought heroic viticulture back to the Ribeira Sacra.
