Penedès

Penedès is known for Cava. Can Ràfols dels Caus shows another side of it: in the Massís del Garraf south-west of Barcelona, a wild limestone massif by the Mediterranean. Of the 455-hectare estate, only about 50 hectares are planted with vines; the rest is forest, scrub and rock. This is the only estate we carry from Penedès, with 13 wines from Xarel·lo to Merlot, from CHF 21.

Carlos Esteva turned the historic property into a winery from the 1970s onwards and experimented a great deal; today Jordi carries his approach forward. Start with the Terraprima Blanc 2025: Xarel·lo, Macabeo and Muscat from certified organic vineyards, with part of the Xarel·lo aged in chestnut, CHF 21. The Xarel·lo Pairal 2022 comes from 70-year-old bush vines in the El Cirerer vineyard and ferments for 40 days in chestnut barrels, 1,789 numbered bottles. The El Rocallís 2022 is Incrocio Manzoni from a single vineyard with marine fossils in its limestone. And the Clímax Brut Nature 2019 shows what Xarel·lo, Macabeo and Chenin Blanc become after 30 months on the lees with no dosage.
