Bodegas Raíz de Guzmán

Bodegas Raíz de Guzmán

Raíz is more than just a name. It is the connecting element that unites all the values of the Bodega: earth, roots, tradition, passion. Raíz de Guzmán was founded in 1998 and is the continuation of a project that began in 1985 with the introduction of the Páramo de Guzmán cheese specialties. Raíz was born from the same philosophy: tradition, innovation and above all quality. The Bodega Raíz de Guzmán is a unique and special place where around 500 French and American oak barrels house the wines as they mature. A tunnel nearly 1 km long guards the best-kept secret of the "root" wines.

Origin

Bodegas Raíz de Guzmán is located in Roa de Duero, in the province of Burgos in northern Spain. The winery lies in the heart of the prestigious D.O. Ribera del Duero wine region, best known for its high-quality red wines made from the Tempranillo grape.

The Winemaker

Cayetana Santos & Mapi Melado – women with vision, heart, and character. Cayetana Santos is the owner of Bodegas Raíz de Guzmán and of the famous Páramo de Guzmán cheeses. With true conviction and passion, she leads the family business. “We are a small winery. We work hard, we are committed. We love our product – and we believe in it.” Cayetana’s driving force: never standing still. “We are nonconformists – in the best sense of the word. That is the key to success. At Raíz we are always striving for more.” By her side: Mapi Melado, the estate’s oenologist. For her, wine is an expression of soul, patience, and dedication: “Wine is born from the earth, but it comes to life with heart, with effort, with soul and devotion.” With great sensitivity, she faces current challenges such as climate change and evolving consumer habits: “The future calls for freshness, lightness, and elegance – without losing style and depth.” Together, Cayetana and Mapi shape the character of Raíz: grounded, ambitious, and forward-looking.

Philosophy

Vineyards with character – rooted in terroir. Bodegas Raíz de Guzmán owns 25 hectares of its own vineyards as well as carefully selected parcels in villages such as Pardilla and Moradillo. The special altitude and soil diversity of these areas give rise to wines of great expression, deeply connected to their origin. The proximity of the vineyards to the winery allows for particularly quick harvesting and short transport times, crucial for preserving grape quality. The focus is clearly on sustainable viticulture. With yields of less than 4,000 kilos per hectare per year, the estate is firmly committed to quality. Vine care is carried out naturally – with minimal use of chemicals and herbicides. The significant difference between day and night temperatures slows the ripening process. The result is wines with higher acidity, more intense aromas, and a remarkable phenolic structure – authentic, elegant, and expressive.

    Grapes

Vines Bodegas Raíz de Guzmán manages 25 hectares of its own vineyards aged between 25 and 55 years. The main grape variety is Tempranillo, grown in the D.O. Ribera del Duero.

  • Klima

    Climate

Climate The climate is continental with hot summers, cold winters and strong temperature fluctuations between day and night, which favour a slow and balanced ripening of the grapes.

Vinification

Harvesting is done exclusively by hand during the day, in small 15-kg crates, to ensure the grapes reach the winery quickly and gently, avoiding oxidation. At the winery, the grapes undergo double selection: first the bunches, then the individual berries at the sorting table, strictly assessed for ripeness, health, and cleanliness. Each parcel is vinified separately to preserve the unique characteristics of the different soils. Spontaneous alcoholic fermentation with natural yeasts allows for the most authentic development with minimal intervention – emphasizing typicity. Malolactic fermentation takes place partly in stainless steel tanks and partly in 225-liter French oak barrels at controlled temperatures. Careful use of oak gives the wines freshness, balance, and elegance. For ageing, 500 barriques from renowned coopers are used – 80% French oak, 20% American oak – imparting structure and depth to the wines.
