Bodega & Viñedos Carres is a family-run, organic winery in Casas de Eufemia (Utiel-Requena, Valencia), producing authentic, natural wines in harmony with regional tradition and terroir.
Bodega & Viñedos Carrés hails from the small village of Casas de Eufemia, part of Requena in the historic wine region of Utiel-Requena (Province of Valencia), renowned for its native Bobal grape and boasting a winemaking tradition dating back 2,500 years.
Founded in 2008 by José Luis Torres Carpio, Bodega & Viñedos Carrés was born from the desire to produce small, artisanal batches in the heart of the Utiel-Requena denomination, with minimal intervention and always in harmony with local tradition and the unique terroir. A trained oenologist (School of Viticulture and Oenology in Requena), José Luis cultivates around 2.5 hectares of his own chemical-free vineyards, where the lunar calendar is strictly followed throughout the agricultural cycle.
José Luis Torres Carpio follows a clear winemaking philosophy: biodynamic cultivation, hand-selection of old Bobal vines, minimal cellar intervention – only light sulfur use, spontaneous fermentation, and long maceration periods – all to create authentic, terroir-driven wines with strong regional character.
Location & Soils
Location and soils The vineyards of Bodega Carrés are rooted in calcareous, well-drained soils with a high gravel content, providing ideal conditions for the deep-rooting Bobal vine.
Grapes
Vines Bodega Carrés manages five single vineyards – Membrillera, Malarado, Olivastro, Pico d'Àliga and Sabinilla – with old, naturally tended vines of the varieties Bobal, Garnacha, Tempranillo and the indigenous white grape Tardana.
Climate
Climate The climate in the Utiel-Requena region is continental with Mediterranean influences: hot, dry summers, cold winters and large day-night temperature variations create ideal conditions for slow grape ripening and the development of complex aromas.
At Bodega Carrés, vinification is carried out with minimal intervention: grapes are hand-harvested, spontaneously fermented with wild yeasts, gently extracted, often vinified in open fermenters, and aged in used oak barrels or amphorae. Wines are usually bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with minimal sulfur, preserving the pure expression of grape variety and terroir.
Each wine is named after the vineyard parcel from which its grapes are sourced. These plots, lovingly cared for by the family for generations, range from 60 to over 100 years old, safeguarding a rich winemaking heritage.
