Mas Asturias

Mas Asturias

José Mas has set himself the life goal that his wine Massuria should become the reference wine from Bierzo and the Mencía grape variety. To achieve this goal, he focuses exclusively on the exciting yet challenging Mencía grape variety and produces only this one wine -- striving for perfection with the utmost dedication.

Origin

Bodega Mas Asturias is located in the heart of Bierzo, in the beautiful village of Villafranca del Bierzo. With 20 years of experience and four hectares of his own non-cloned, old vines spread over twelve plots, the bodega is dedicated exclusively to the delicate yet outstanding Mencía grape variety and to the production of a single wine: Massuria.

The Winemaker

José Mas is an agricultural engineer and studied oenology in France at the prestigious agronomy school in Montpellier. From 2002 to 2004, while working with the Moueix family in Pomerol and Saint-Émilion (Château Pétrus), he gained valuable experience in producing high-quality terroir wines with great ageing potential. Today, he applies this knowledge to the production of Massuria. Annual production is limited to around 15,000 bottles. For José, only quality matters – not quantity – in crafting the perfect wine.

Philosophy

José places great importance on reflecting the character of the Bierzo terroir in each vintage. The Mencía grape, the year’s climate, and the specific traits of each plot all shape the wine. He strives for elegant wines with good ageing potential, which gain refinement, character, and finesse over time. This underscores the quality of the grapes and the careful vinification process. The older these wines become, the more extraordinary they develop. We have been able to reserve a few bottles of older vintages for our customers.

Vines The vines, mainly Mencía, were planted between 1912 and 1970 and are organically farmed without the use of herbicides or pesticides, to preserve the authenticity of the terroir.

  • Klima

    Climate

Climate The climate in El Bierzo is a temperate Mediterranean microclimate with Atlantic influence, characterised by mild winters and warm summers that favour viticulture.

Vinification

The bodega practices organic viticulture, tending the vineyards with the utmost care and maintaining strict hygiene in the cellar. This meticulous work makes it possible to keep the wine’s sulfur levels to a minimum. The vinification of Massuria is traditional and minimally invasive, with hand harvesting, spontaneous fermentation by native yeasts, and careful temperature control. Ageing takes place in French oak barrels, some of them new, to impart complexity and elegance to the wine. The wine is neither filtered nor fined, preserving its natural character and the full authenticity of the Bierzo terroir.

Distinctive Feature

After nearly 20 years, the Mas family has decided to build a new winery to further expand their vision. This project, located at the entrance to Villafranca del Bierzo, marks an important milestone and demonstrates their long-term commitment to quality and innovation. José is giving himself another 20 years to perfect his wine.
