Mas Asturias - Massuria (2020)

Grape variety: 98% Mencía, 2% Alicante Bouschet.

Production: 6,490 bottles (0.75 l), 330 magnum bottles, 120 double magnums, 15 6-litre bottles, and 4 12-litre bottles.

Soils: Predominantly clay and clay-loam soils, supplemented by individual plots with rounded pebbles.

Climate: Mediterranean climate with continental influences.

Vinification: The grapes were hand-picked under optimal conditions over four consecutive days from September 4th to 7th. A harvest team of 18 people ensured that each plot was picked at its optimal ripeness and exclusively during the cool morning hours to prevent the grapes from arriving warm at the cellar. This was followed by 12 months of aging in French barriques (5% new barriques) with racking every six months, then 36 months of maturation in stainless steel tanks, and subsequent bottle aging.

Alcohol content: 14.0%

Tasting notes: Massuria 2020 displays a clear, luminous garnet red in the glass. The nose reveals intense and expressive aromas of black fruits and fine spices, reflecting the character of a warm vintage. The fruit is clearly dominant, elegantly complemented by subtle spice.

On the palate, the 2020 vintage is powerful yet exceptionally well-balanced. Muscular tannins give the wine structure and depth, while its freshness and precision provide tension. This vintage shows a perfect balance between concentration, power, and aromatic expressiveness.

Massuria 2020 reflects these very qualities – a dense and powerful wine with concentrated fruit, silky tannins, and remarkable elegance, maintaining a harmonious balance despite its intensity.

The finish is long and persistent, marked by dark fruit, fine spice notes, and impressive depth, indicating great aging potential.

Special characteristics: 2020 began with an exceptionally rainy winter, providing the vines with sufficient water reserves for the subsequent very dry and hot summer. After an early flowering, the vintage developed rapidly, leading – along with 2017 – to one of the earliest harvests in the last twenty years. The grapes ripened slowly and evenly, producing small, highly concentrated berries that give the wine its pronounced structure and tannin quality. 2020, along with 2018 and 2019, is one of the winery's exceptional top vintages.
