Production: 6,490 bottles, 330 magnums, 120 double magnums, 15 six-litre and 4 twelve-litre bottles
Soils: mainly clay and clay loam, a few plots with rolled gravel
Climate: Mediterranean with continental influences
Vinification: hand-picked over four days, 4 to 7 September, by a team of 18, only in the cool morning hours; 12 months in French barriques (5% new), racked every six months, then 36 months in stainless steel and bottle ageing
Alcohol: 14.0%
After a very wet winter the vines had enough in reserve for a hot, dry summer. Flowering came early, and together with 2017 this was one of the earliest harvests in twenty years. The berries stayed small and concentrated: the 2020 is dense, with black fruit and spice, muscular tannins and a long, dark finish.
Its window runs from 2025 to 2050 and those firm tannins still need time. If you open it now, decant it and serve it with game, a braise, or cecina and air-dried bacon.

The winery
José Mas makes exactly one wine, Massuria, from Mencía vines planted between 1912 and 1970. He worked for the Moueix family of Pétrus and is giving himself another 20 years to make it perfect.

Because he has set himself a goal: the Massuria is to become the reference wine of the Bierzo and of Mencía. So he puts everything into this one grape and this one wine, and quality comes before quantity. José is giving himself another 20 years to make it perfect.
