Soils: clay loam, average 600 m, slopes of 5 to over 10%

Aspect: north-east to south-west, depending on the plot

Climate: continental-Atlantic with wide day-night swings

Vinification: hand-picked into 15-kg crates, sorted, destemmed without sulphur, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, two weeks on the skins, pumped over twice a day

Ageing: 12 months in new and semi-new 500-litre French oak barrels

The vines for Pico Tuerto were planted between 1901 and 1910, Mencía and Doña Blanca growing together as a field blend. The name comes from a 2,051-metre mountain. Deep purple, ripe red and black fruit, spice and something mineral; full on the palate, with velvety tannins and a long finish.

It gains a lot with air, so open or decant it an hour ahead. Serve it with lamb, roast beef or botillo, the Bierzo sausage.

Still unsure?

Where does the name Sangarida come from?

From Greek mythology. Attis was chosen to serve the cult of the goddess Cybele and had sworn her eternal chastity. Then he fell in love with the nymph Sangarida and broke his vow. Cybele destroyed the tree Sangarida lived in, and the nymph died. The Fariña family, whose first winery is called Attis, brings her back to life in Bierzo as a wine.
