Pizarra means slate, which is what this Mencía grows on. The 2017 is the youngest Pizarra we stock and, at 8,000 bottles, the largest vintage: cherry red, ripe cherry and redcurrant with cedar, chocolate and a hint of green coffee. Fresh on the palate, with ripe tannins and a finish of dark chocolate and spice.
It has plenty of time ahead; we would leave it for three or four years. If you open it now, drink it at 16 to 18 °C with grilled meat, lamb or a mushroom risotto.

In 1979 Fernando planted his first plot on an overgrown piece of land belonging to his wife Ana's family. Today the vines grow on Roman-era terraces above the Sil, on slopes of up to 85%.

It began in 1979, when Fernando planted his first plot, “Carballo Cobo”, on an overgrown piece of land belonging to his wife Ana's family. Reviving viticulture in such a tough setting was a real risk. Today the family farms around 25 hectares in 86 plots along the Sil and beyond. Algueira is one of the pioneers that brought heroic viticulture back to the Ribeira Sacra.
