In the glass and in the cellar

Grapes: 50% Godello, 50% Doña Blanca

Vintage: 2022

Production: about 3,950 bottles

Soils: clay loam

Site: slopes of the Montes Aquilianos near Campo and San Lorenzo, Bierzo, 550 to 650 m

Climate: temperate, with Atlantic influence and continental swings

Vinification: hand-picked into 15 kg crates, destemmed and pressed in a pneumatic press, Godello and Doña Blanca fermented together spontaneously (co-fermentation) in semi-new French oak and acacia barrels (228 and 500 litres)

Ageing: 12 months on the lees in the same barrels, with bâtonnage

Alcohol: 13%

La Yegua is a 2,142-metre mountain above the Bierzo, and Sangarida named this white after it: half Godello, half Doña Blanca. Pale straw, green apple, pear and lemon, herbs and only a little spice from the wood. Creamy from the lees, with lively acidity and a herbal finish.

Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 °C with seafood, smoked fish or chicken. It also works as an aperitif with a few slices of cecina.

The winery

Sangarida

In 2019 the Fariña brothers of Attis started a project in the Bierzo with Robustiano's daughter Lía, whose mother comes from the area. Two wines bear the names of the Pico Tuerto and La Yegua mountains.

Still unsure?

Where does the name Sangarida come from?

From Greek mythology. Attis was chosen to serve the cult of the goddess Cybele and had sworn her eternal chastity. Then he fell in love with the nymph Sangarida and broke his vow. Cybele destroyed the tree Sangarida lived in, and the nymph died. The Fariña family, whose first winery is called Attis, brings her back to life in Bierzo as a wine.
