The Casa Don Ángel with less oak: red berries, herbs, grainy tannins and good acidity.
Red wine · Bobal · Utiel-Requena, Spain · 0.75 L
Vintage: 2019
Grape: 100 % Bobal
Origin: D.O. Utiel-Requena, Vera de Estenas near Utiel (Valencia)
Soils: Calcareous clay loam
Climate: Mediterranean with continental influence
Ageing: 15 months in used French oak barrels
Alcohol: 15 % vol
The 2019 spent 15 months in used French barrels, whereas the 2020 and 2021 had 24 months in Allier oak. Bright cherry red, with red berries, toasty notes and dried herbs on the nose. Good acidity on the palate, grainy tannins and a balanced structure.
At 15 % alcohol it belongs with food: hearty meat, game, aged cheese. Of the Casa Don Ángel vintages, this is our tip for anyone who wants less oak in the glass.

The winery
Félix Martínez is the third generation to run the bodega, founded in 1945. His bush vines stand at 800 metres at the foot of the Sierra del Remedio, where the Solano wind takes the edge off the summer heat.
Vino de Pago is the highest quality level for Spanish estates. It applies to smaller estates that make outstanding wine and meet further criteria. Vera de Estenas received it in 2013, in recognition of the estate's microclimate and its consistently high quality. Only a few bodegas in Spain may use the name. The Merlot carries the origin “D.O.P. Pago Vera de Estenas”.
