Soils: gneiss and slate

Aspect: south-west

Climate: Mediterranean microclimate with Atlantic influence

Vinification: whole bunches, foot-trodden in 600-litre wooden vats; cold maceration, fermented with 100% stems and no added yeast

Ageing: 12 months in French oak barrels, then in tank

Alcohol: 12.5%

The youngest Risco, 6,000 bottles. Pale cherry red, raspberry, cranberry and cherry with cedar, nutmeg and clove. Light and fresh on the palate, with fine, silky tannins and gneiss and slate on the long finish.

Not a wine for heavy food: veal, poultry or a creamy cheese suit it better. It can age for a few more years.

How long has Algueira existed, and who started it?

It began in 1979, when Fernando planted his first plot, “Carballo Cobo”, on an overgrown piece of land belonging to his wife Ana's family. Reviving viticulture in such a tough setting was a real risk. Today the family farms around 25 hectares in 86 plots along the Sil and beyond. Algueira is one of the pioneers that brought heroic viticulture back to the Ribeira Sacra.
