Vinification: whole bunches, foot-trodden in French oak vats of 2,000 and 5,000 litres; cold maceration before fermentation, temperature-controlled fermentation, more than 30 days of post-fermentation maceration
Ageing: 12 to 18 months in French oak barrels and large casks
Alcohol: 14%
Bright ruby with garnet edges; redcurrant and black cherry on the nose with violet, tobacco and graphite. Soft tannins, well-integrated acidity, cedar and spice on the finish.
It is fully mature and needs no more cellaring. At 16 to 18 °C it goes with lamb chops or game, but we would open it with braised mushrooms.

In 1979 Fernando planted his first plot on an overgrown piece of land belonging to his wife Ana's family. Today the vines grow on Roman-era terraces above the Sil, on slopes of up to 85%.

It began in 1979, when Fernando planted his first plot, “Carballo Cobo”, on an overgrown piece of land belonging to his wife Ana's family. Reviving viticulture in such a tough setting was a real risk. Today the family farms around 25 hectares in 86 plots along the Sil and beyond. Algueira is one of the pioneers that brought heroic viticulture back to the Ribeira Sacra.
