Coto de Gomariz is a family-run winery in the heart of the D.O. Ribeiro in Galicia, Spain, specialising in the cultivation of indigenous grape varieties such as Treixadura, Godello, Loureira, Albariño and Sousón. Founded by Ricardo Carreiro Ameijeiras, the winery has pursued the goal of reviving the historical significance of the region since the 1980s. The name "Gomariz" derives from the Galician word "gomariza", meaning "vine pruning", and points to the long tradition of viticulture in this region.
The vineyards cover 30 hectares on the slopes of the Avia Valley, characterized by slate, granite, and sandy soils, as well as a unique microclimate that offers ideal conditions for cultivating local grape varieties. The estate belongs to the D.O. Ribeiro, one of the five Galician appellations and among the oldest in Spain (1932).
Under the direction of winemaker Inma Pazos, Coto de Gomariz practices sustainable viticulture with organic and biodynamic methods, including spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts and the use of alternative vessels such as clay amphorae, in order to preserve the freshness and finesse of the wines. The estate’s wines are renowned for their elegance, vibrancy, and authentic expression of the Galician terroir.
In the 1970s, Ricardo Carreiro Ameijeiras began reviving the historic vineyards of Gomariz by replanting native grape varieties such as Treixadura, Godello, Albariño, and Sousón. The first bottle under the name Coto de Gomariz was released in the 1980s. Since then, Coto de Gomariz has earned a reputation as a pioneer in the region, producing not only high-quality white wines but also characterful reds, demonstrating the diversity and potential of D.O. Ribeiro.
