Domaine de la Coquillade encompasses biodynamically managed vineyards in the heart of the Luberon and is part of an estate that unites wine, nature and Provençal living. In recent years, the winery has been gently converted to sustainable and biodynamic winemaking. Furthermore, traditional vinification methods have been reintroduced to authentically reflect the terroir.
The estate is located in the Rhône Valley, mainly within the AOC Ventoux, at the heart of the Luberon Regional Natural Park – a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1990. Domaine de la Coquillade sits idyllically on a hill above Gargas in the Luberon (Vaucluse, southern France), offering sweeping views of Mont Ventoux and the surrounding rolling hills, nestled among vineyards, lavender fields, and pine forests – a unique setting in the heart of Provence.
Frank John, a renowned oenologist and vine grower from the Palatinate, has led the biodynamic conversion of Domaine de la Coquillade since 2024. He has transformed the entire estate, including its cellar practices, with synergistic, natural methods – bringing to life the vision of a fully integrated biodynamic project in the Luberon.
Location & Soils
Location and soils The soils at Domaine de la Coquillade are stony, calcareous and well-drained – shaped by barren subsoil that encourages the vines to root deeply, creating ideal conditions for concentrated, characterful wines.
Grapes
Vines Domaine de la Coquillade cultivates a variety of southern French grape varieties, including Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Carignan, Cinsault, Rolle (Vermentino) and Viognier, which translate the Mediterranean terroir into elegant, authentic wines.
Climate
Climate The climate at Domaine de la Coquillade is Mediterranean with hot, sunny days and cool nights, enabling a slow, aromatic ripening of the grapes and an excellent balance between fruit and freshness.
Winemaking at Domaine de la Coquillade follows biodynamic principles, with spontaneous fermentation, minimal intervention, careful parcel selection, and the targeted use of oak barrels and amphorae, in order to reflect origin, grape variety, and vintage as authentically and precisely as possible.
Domaine de la Coquillade stands for sustainable, high-quality viticulture and successfully obtained organic certification (AB) in 2022. The estate consistently avoids synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and soil tillage, working intensively with biodynamic methods – with the goal of producing authentic, terroir-driven wines of consistently high quality through healthy soils and rich biodiversity.
