Champagne Denis Frézier stands for seven generations of craftsmanship, experience and a deep connection with the Montagne de Reims. Since 1823, when the first Denis Frézier laid the foundation of the family estate, knowledge has been passed down from generation to generation. Today, Sébastien and Aurore Frézier lead the house – with clear focus, hands-on work and an authentic understanding of their terroir.
The estate is located in Monthelon at the Côte de Blancs, in the south of Épernay. The family’s history began in 1823, and since then seven generations have cultivated the same plots with continuity and meticulous handwork. A defining milestone came in 1935, when Alfred Frézier vinified part of the harvest himself for the first time and sold it under the family name. Today, Sébastien and Aurore carry this tradition forward, with a careful eye for the unique character of each individual parcel.
The current winemaker is Sébastien Frézier. He has been running the family estate since 2003 and works with a calm, precise, and down-to-earth approach. Frézier’s Champagnes are true grower Champagnes: everything from pruning to bottling is done in-house. Sébastien is supported by his wife Aurore, who works alongside him and together with him represents the seventh generation of the family. Both rely on dependable handwork, clear decisions, and an unfiltered relationship with their terroir — without big words, but with consistent work in the vineyard and the cellar.
For Sébastien, great Champagne is made in the vineyard. Healthy soils, biodiversity, careful cover cropping, and a strict rejection of herbicides define his work. The estate has been certified Viticulture Durable en Champagne and Haute Valeur Environnementale since 2016. In 2020, the conversion to organic farming began, and since 2023 all vineyards have been fully organic-certified. His philosophy is simple: observe, respect, intervene only when necessary. The goal is a clear, honest expression of the Montagne de Reims — without unnecessary effects.
Location & Soils
Location and soils The vineyards of Champagne Frézier are situated in Monthelon at the Côte de Blancs, in the south of Épernay.
Grapes
Vines The Frézier family primarily grows Pinot Noir and Chardonnay – the two classic grape varieties of the Montagne de Reims, from which their clearly structured, mineral champagnes are crafted.
Climate
Climate The climate in Rilly-la-Montagne is cool-continental with pronounced temperature extremes, which ensures slowly ripening grapes, high freshness and the characteristic tension of the champagnes.
Vinification is carried out with restraint and precision. Each parcel is harvested separately and gently pressed to preserve the aromatic purity of the musts. The base wines are made in a modern, temperature-controlled stainless-steel cellar built in 2014. For Sébastien, the assemblage is the heart of his work: the balance between terroir, vintage, and style. Depending on the cuvée, the bottles mature on the lees for between 2 and 8 years before disgorgement. A subsequent resting period of at least three months ensures additional harmony. As a récoltant-manipulant and a member of the Vignerons Indépendants, Champagne Frézier stands for authentic grower craftsmanship — from vineyard to finished bottle.
What makes Champagne Frézier special is its combination of true craftsmanship, long family continuity, and an unusually clear, down-to-earth way of winemaking. The estate works exclusively with its own grapes, vinifies in small batches, and allows each cuvée to mature for as long as it needs — without compromise and without industrial shortcuts. This calm, precise approach results in Champagnes that do not seek to impress with loudness, but convince through finesse, balance, and an honest expression of their origin.
