Veigamoura is a boutique bodega. Toni Alonso focuses on two white wines. And this in pure perfection, with only a few hundred bottles per year. For us, the Veigamoura wines rank among the best Albariño wines from the Rias Baixas. “Froito do amor e respecto pola terra”: fruit of love and respect for the earth. That is Toni Alonso’s appreciation for his vineyards.
The Veigamoura winery is located in the Condado do Tea subregion of the D.O. Rías Baixas in Spain, a renowned area for white wines in Galicia, in the northwest of Spain. The estate is specialized in the cultivation and vinification of exceptional white wines that reflect the freshness and elegance of the region.
Toni Alonso is the dedicated winemaker behind Veigamoura. With deep respect for the traditions of the region and a focus on quality, he produces characterful and authentic Albariño wines. His approach includes hand-harvesting the grapes, spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, and aging on the fine lees, which gives the wines depth and complexity. Thanks to the proximity of the vineyards to the Atlantic coast, the wines display an intriguing combination of the soil’s minerality and the ocean breeze of the Atlantic.
Toni Alonso crafts high-quality, terroir-driven white wines in very small quantities. With a focus on sustainability and minimally invasive winemaking, the vines are carefully tended to capture the essence of the native grape varieties and the unique microclimate of Rías Baixas.
Location and soils The vineyards of Veigamoura are situated on gently sloping hills characterized by granite soils. These soils promote the minerality and freshness that are characteristic of the wines from Rías Baixas.
Vines Veigamoura focuses on the indigenous grape variety Albariño, renowned for its aromatic intensity and freshness. The vines are cultivated in traditional pergola training to optimally protect the grapes from humidity and ensure even ripening.
Climate The climate in the Rías Baixas region is a maritime Atlantic climate, characterized by mild temperatures and regular rainfall. The fresh sea breeze and sunshine promote the intensity of the grapes.
Vinification follows an artisanal approach designed to preserve the purity and authenticity of the grapes. After hand-harvesting, the grapes are gently pressed, and fermentation occurs spontaneously with native yeasts. Aging takes place in stainless steel tanks, sometimes on the fine lees, to give the wines additional texture and complexity.
Veigamoura Quinquenio is made exclusively from Albariño grapes grown in vineyards located 280 meters above sea level. These vineyards are on steep slopes with shallow, low-fertility soils interspersed with granite fragments, which makes work in the vineyard particularly challenging and demanding. However, the effort is rewarded by the quality and uniqueness of the grapes produced. In the cellar, fermentation occurs with native yeasts, and after aging on the fine lees with bâtonnage, the wine spends five winters in the winery’s cellar before fully developing its character and being released to the market. The 2018 vintage has recently been made available in limited quantities.
