Sangarida

The name “Sangarida” comes from Greek mythology and symbolizes passion and rebirth – fitting the philosophy of the winery, which combines tradition with modern creativity.

Greek mythology tells that Attis was a handsome young man chosen by the goddess Cybele to oversee her religious cult in exchange for a vow of eternal chastity and abstinence. However, Attis fell passionately in love with a nymph named Sangarida and broke his vow. Cybele punished Sangarida by destroying the tree in which the nymph lived, and she died. Now Sangarida has been resurrected and lives on as wine.

Origin

Sangarida is a winery in Spain’s Bierzo region. The vineyards are located in Campo, Molinaseca, and near San Lorenzo del Bierzo on the slopes of the Montes Aquilianos. Here, indigenous grape varieties such as Mencía, Godello, and Doña Blanca thrive on old, organically farmed vines. The Bierzo region lies in a beautiful, expansive valley surrounded by mountains. Two of them, Pico Tuerto (2,051 meters above sea level) and La Yegua (2,142 meters above sea level), lend their names to two of Sangarida’s wines. Bierzo is known as a climatic crossroads between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.

The Winemakers

Continuing the family tradition and history of ATTIS Bodega y Viñedos, the Fariña brothers have further developed their philosophy of working with authentic, artisan wines made from indigenous grape varieties. In 2019, together with their longtime companion Jean-François Hébrard, they launched a new project in Bierzo – joined by Robustiano Fariña’s daughter Lía, who unites her father’s roots in Rías Baixas with those of her mother in El Bierzo. The mythology of ATTIS has now found its way into this neighboring wine region. Sangarida is a bold project – both stylistically and visually – that reflects the creative energy of ATTIS, which has found a second home beyond the mountains of León.

Philosophy

The Fariña family is supported by their longtime friend and renowned oenologist Jean-François Hébrard. Together, they rely on organic viticulture, spontaneous fermentation, and ageing on fine lees to preserve the freshness and elegance of the wines. The vineyards are planted with old vines of Mencía, Godello, and Doña Blanca. Sangarida thus combines traditional craftsmanship with modern creativity and expresses the Fariña family’s passion for authentic wines.

Vineyards and terroir

  • Location and soils
Sangarida's soils consist predominantly of slate and clay with sandy inclusions – ideal for deep-rooted vines and characterful, mineral wines.

  • Vines
Sangarida wines are made from the indigenous grape varieties Mencía, Godello and Doña Blanca , which grow on old, organically farmed vines on the slopes of the Bierzo region.

  • Climate
The climate in Sangarida is a transitional climate between Atlantic and continental, characterized by moderate rainfall, hot summers, and cool nights – ideal for balanced ripening and aromatic finesse of the grapes.

Vinification

The wines of Sangarida are vinified according to artisanal principles: the grapes come from old vines, are harvested by hand, fermented spontaneously with native yeasts, and then aged on the fine lees in stainless steel tanks or neutral barrels – with the aim of preserving the freshness, authenticity, and sense of origin of each grape variety and plot.

Wines

The specialty of Sangarida 's red wines lies in their elegant interpretation of the Mencía grape variety: they come from old, high-altitude vines on slate and clay soils, are spontaneously fermented , carefully aged and display a fresh, mineral style with a fine structure , cool fruit and a subtle spiciness - an expression of finesse rather than power , which authentically reflects the terroir of Bierzo.

Sangarida's white wines—made from the indigenous varieties Godello and Doña Blanca —are characterized by their precise freshness, saline minerality, and fine texture . They come from old vines on barren soils, undergo spontaneous fermentation , and are aged on the fine lees, giving them complexity, depth, and ageability —white wines with character that impressively reflect the cool microclimate and terroir of Bierzo.

Our favorite red wine is El Morredero , a very fresh and characterful red wine. The white wine La Yegua is perfect for both an aperitif and a meal: the blend of Godello and Doña Blanca results in a very exciting white wine.

Distinctive Feature

Sangarida’s specialty lies in the combination of old vines of indigenous varieties such as Mencía, Godello, and Doña Blanca, spontaneous minimal-intervention vinification, and a deep connection to Bierzo’s unique terroir – all presented in a boldly artistic, modern identity that unites mythology, origin, and innovation.
