Château Aux Graves de la Laurence

Château Aux Graves de la Laurence is a family-run winery in Saint-Loubès near Bordeaux, known for its characterful, artisanal Bordeaux cuvées with classic terroir expression.

Origin

Château Aux Graves de la Laurence is located in Saint-Loubès, a commune in the Gironde department of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, France. The estate lies on a gravelly rise with a clay subsoil, known as “Aux Graves,” bordered by the small Laurence River, which flows into the Dordogne. This location, between Bordeaux and Libourne near the 45th parallel, offers a temperate Atlantic climate with sufficient sunshine and rainfall, resulting in balanced grape ripening.

The Winemaker

Bernard Hébrard, the winemaker at Château Aux Graves de la Laurence, is an experienced oenologist and former director of the laboratory at Grézillac as well as of the Wine Service of the Chamber of Agriculture of the Gironde. After retiring in 2003, he and his wife Marie-Odile purchased a neglected vineyard in Saint-Loubès, which he has since cultivated with dedication and traditional methods. On the 2.24-hectare estate, situated on a gravelly rise with a clay subsoil, they practice manual harvesting, leaf-thinning, and crop reduction to produce characterful Bordeaux blends with a classic expression of terroir.

Philosophy

The philosophy of Château Aux Graves de la Laurence is rooted in traditional craftsmanship and deep respect for terroir. Bernard Hébrard draws on his decades of experience to produce authentic Bordeaux wines together with his wife Marie-Odile. They cultivate their vineyards through manual harvesting, leaf-thinning, and crop reduction – practices reminiscent of the Grands Crus. In the cellar, they rely on traditional methods such as manual punching down of the cap and ageing in French oak barrels, a quarter of which are renewed each year. This meticulous work results in distinctive Bordeaux Supérieur wines, which are subject to higher quality standards set by the regulator, offering great finesse and expressive character.

Vineyards and terroir

  • Location and soils
The soil of Château Aux Graves de la Laurence consists of gravelly topsoil on clayey subsoil – ideal for deep rooting of the vines, good drainage, and the ripening of classic Bordeaux grape varieties.

  • Vines
Château Aux Graves de la Laurence grows the six classic Bordeaux grape varieties: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Carménère, which are combined in different proportions to create elegant, structured cuvées.

  • Climate
The climate in Saint-Loubès is temperate Atlantic with sufficient sunshine, regular rainfall, and cool nights—ideal conditions for the slow, balanced ripening of Bordeaux grape varieties.

Vinification

Vinification at Château Aux Graves de la Laurence follows traditional methods: After manual harvesting, the grapes undergo temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks, with the cap manually punched down. The wines then age for about 12 months in French oak barrels, with roughly a quarter renewed annually, to enhance structure, finesse, and ageing potential.

Wines

Château Aux Graves de la Laurence produces two distinctive red wines: The Réserve Traditionnelle is a classic Bordeaux blend with elegant fruit, fine tannins, and balanced aging from French oak. The Ampélos Biturica combines all six Bordeaux grape varieties in a powerful, profound blend with complex spice and great ageing potential.
